Look Out, Hilary Duff —— Here Comes Raven

Former 'Cosby' kid juggling several music, TV, film projects

Raven is looking a lot like this year's Hilary Duff.

The actress, who also has her own Disney Channel show, is mounting a major move to both the big screen and the record stores.

Along with appearing in two major movies, "The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement" and "Fat Albert" (see "Aaron Carter Joins 'Fat Albert' Cast; Costumes Unveiled"), Raven (formerly Raven-Symonéé) will shoot two others for release in 2005, and she'll record an LP.

Raven has released two albums before, including one when she was just 8 years old, but the former "The Cosby Show" co-star is taking her latest much more seriously.

"I'm trying to do this new thing, which is not really out today," Raven said recently, choosing not to elaborate. "There's gonna be new producers. ... It's gonna be a new sound."

The album is due at the end of the year, but Raven will tide fans over with appearances on a couple of soundtracks, beginning May 18 with three songs on the companion album to her Disney show, "That's So Raven." In August, "The Princess Diaries 2" soundtrack will feature two of her tracks.

"I'm also singing 'Superstitious' [on an upcoming Motown television special], and I'm doing a concert for DirecTV," Raven said.

As for her movie career, the big news is Raven has signed on for a remake of "Sparkle," a 1976 classic about sisters trying to make it big with their R&B group. "It's a very, very significant film, very important to my people," Raven said.

Aaliyah was once attached to the remake (see "Aaliyah Working On New LP, Up For 'Sparkle' Remake"), and most recently Ja Rule and Ashanti were said to be co-starring (see "Ja Rule And Ashanti To Star In Remakes Of 'Sparkle' And 'Grease' "), though the rest of the cast has not yet been confirmed.

Raven's other upcoming movie is "All-American Girl," based on a novel by "Princess Diaries" author Meg Cabot.

"It's about a girl who saves the president by accident and becomes a national hero," Raven said. Along the way, her character also charms the president's son. "My dad's executive-producing it, so I'm really excited."

Raven is also developing a movie with her roommate, Lindsay Lohan, and will star alongside 3LW in a "Cheetah Girls" sitcom based on the Disney Channel movie starring the girls (see "3LW Bringing 'Cheetah Girls' To TV, May Get Real In Atlanta").

"I've got a lot of stuff going, I've got to get some sleep," Raven joked.

So Long, Stress!

Even with her supercool career on track, Raven still has to deal with stuff like peer pressure! We sat down with the actress and singer to find out about what keeps her from following the wrong crowd.

Having a hit show on TV is something we only dream of, but for Raven, fame and tons of fans is a reality! Of course, it's a hectic and fun life to lead, but having so much attention also means dealing with a lot of peer pressure. For Raven, pressure means stress, and stress means pimples... eek! "I really don't like pimples on my face, and any any type of stress creates that, so when people come up with crazy things to do, I just walk away from peer pressure," she admits.

Wow, it's hard to say no to your friends, but Raven keeps her 'rents in mind when making decisions. "I'm a good girl and I don't want to change that," Raven says. "I want my parents to trust me. I'm working too hard and I don't want to mess it up." It's Awesome that Raven has such a mature attitude, but does she ever go out, and get crazy? "I'm the type of person where, it's like 'let me do my work and then I'll have fun,' " she spills.

"I go to the movies or whatever, but I'm not about to sacrifice all the suff that I could and hopefully will be doing just because I want to go out." That takes serious discipline and commitment, but Raven knows first hand that it pays off big time in the end! You go, girl!

"Royal Tunes" (Raven Is The Flava exclusive)

Singer-Actress Raven is keeping some hip company on The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement soundtrack (Walt Disney Records) Lindsay Lohan, Avril Lavigne, Christy Carlson Romano, and Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell, all contribute songs.

Yet the name that really has her pumped? Julie Andrews, with whom she sings "Your Crowning Glory"

The star of That's So Raven on Disney Channel recalls the day she was asked to team with Andrews, who once again plays queen opposite Hathaway's princess in the sequel.

"I was, like, OK! Anytime! Oh my goodness!" says Raven. "I felt so special. "It is something I will never forget."

The 18-year-old, who plays bubbly social butterfly Princess Asana in the film, has good reason to be excited. First, she is a die hard Andrews fan; as a child she wore out seven (count 'em!) videocassettes of the 1964 umbrella-snapping classic Mary Poppins.

Second, the recording represent Andrew's first onscreen musical performance since her throat surgery several years ago. "People thought she was never going to sing again," says Raven. "So being the first one [to record with her] after surgery is amazing."

Was it intimidating to perform with her idol? Raven reports her costar treated her royally. "She's so nice," she says. "She knows everything, which I thought was just diva of her------------but as a good diva.

Raven is equally enthusiastic about her other soundtrack contribution, the infectious "This Is My Time," whcih closes the film. "That's my baby," she says. "It's the first song on a soundtrack that I've written."

Considering the once-in-a-lifetime experiences she had contributing to the movie and it's music, it just could be her theme song.

Amazin' Raven

Raven's made a big splash on TV with That's So Raven and The Cheetah Girls and their hit sountracks. Now this "supernatural" teen is recording a solo CD. Teen's got the deets!

Q. How will this CD be different?

A. This Projsect is really me. I wrote a few songs, with help from some of the greatest songwriters ever. I wanted to combine alternative with hip hop to create a nice sound.

Q. Describe your sound.

A. Eclectic.

Q. What made you decide to go into singing?

A. Actually I've been singing since I was a little girl. I made my first album when I was 5 years ol

Q. Now that you're succesful in both, will you concetrate on one more than the other?

A. I feel my happiest when I have the freedom to pursue both my acting and singing. I don't want to have to choose one over the other. I love them both.

Q. Is it easier or more difficult to meet guys not that you're superstar Raven?

A. I don't get to hang out too much, so meeting new guys is hard.
